Alisson Becker Reacts to Liverpool’s Plan to Bring in Valencia Goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili

Alisson Becker has disclosed that he was aware of Liverpool’s interest in Giorgi Mamardashvili even before it became widely known.

Liverpool are aiming to secure the Valencia goalkeeper as Alisson’s long-term replacement at Anfield, a strategy that has been fully endorsed by the current Reds’ number 1.

In an interview with The Telegraph, the 31-year-old said: “The club needs to prepare for the future. We are not going to last forever here.

“I am getting old! No, for a goalkeeper I am still young, I have a lot of energy and I still have much to give for this club and I want to give to the club as much as I can, but they have to prepare for the future.

“They have and they will do for different positions as well. We have so many important players with the contract expiring and the club needs to organise themselves.

“I think it was a good idea, I knew about [Mamardashvili] before it came out on social media and that is a good message for me because the club cares about what I think.

“They are doing the right thing in my point of view, but on my side, as long as I have my contract here and as long as I am happy here, the club is happy with me, my family is happy here, I will stay.”

Succession planning is essential for any football club, especially when a player has maintained a key position with the high level of performance that Alisson has displayed at Liverpool.

When the time eventually comes for him to leave, replacing the Brazilian will be no small feat. However, Mamardashvili’s performances for both club and country over the past year indicate that he could be ready to meet that challenge.

Although the 23-year-old hasn’t had the best start to the season, conceding five goals in Valencia’s two LaLiga defeats so far, his six saves across those matches suggest that the outcome could have been even worse without his significant presence in goal.

Alisson has expressed his intention to fulfill the remainder of his Liverpool contract, which would keep him at the club until 2027. This means fans can look forward to seeing much more of the Brazilian at Anfield.

Saying goodbye to a player who has served the club for so long and with such excellence is never easy. However, knowing that a goalkeeper of Mamardashvili’s caliber is waiting to step in could make the transition smoother.
