“He’s a Lucky Boy”: Jamie Carragher Says Liverpool Player Should Have Been Sent Off v Brentford
Liverpool secured a victory over Brentford today in what marked Arne Slot’s first game at Anfield. However, the match wasn’t without its share of controversy.
Slot’s team displayed some moments of excellent football, giving a glimpse of the style the new manager aims to implement. The transition from Jurgen Klopp’s tenure was expected to be challenging, and this game reflected that.
Despite the changes, some aspects of the team remained consistent. One of these constants appears to be the attacking trio of Jota, Salah, and Diaz. All three were instrumental in the opening goal, with Diaz finding the net from a pass by Jota.
The second half of the match, however, brought a different kind of attention to Jota. Rather than a goal, it was his challenge on Brentford’s Nathan Collins that became the focus.
Jota appeared to strike Collins with an arm, causing the defender to go down, yet the Portuguese forward escaped without receiving a card.
On closer inspection and after reviewing the replays, Jamie Carragher remarked that Jota could have been given a red card for the challenge.
Diogo Jota Lucky Not to Be Sent Off During Liverpool v Brentford
Commenting on the incident during Sky Sports’ co-commentary, Carragher expressed that he believes Jota was fortunate to remain on the pitch.
“He definitely puts his arm up, he puts it up towards his face. He’s a lucky boy, Jota,” Carragher said.
Jota posed a constant threat for the Reds throughout the match, but there was something about this particular challenge that seemed off.
As Carragher noted, Jota’s arm movement appeared deliberate, suggesting he was targeting Collins.
On a different day or with a different referee, this could easily have resulted in a punishment, so it’s surprising that Jota escaped without a card.
As the season progresses, we’ll likely see a similar incident result in a red card, reigniting discussions about inconsistency in officiating.
