Liverpool Manager Arne Slot Discusses Major Differences Between Himself and Jurgen Klopp

Liverpool manager Arne Slot has discussed the differences between his approach and that of former Reds boss Jurgen Klopp, ahead of the upcoming match against Brentford at Anfield on Sunday.

Arne Slot is aiming for his Liverpool team to adopt a more controlled and less chaotic playing style compared to the one sometimes seen under Jurgen Klopp.

The Dutch coach, who took over from Klopp earlier this summer, began his tenure with Liverpool on a high note, securing a 2-0 victory over Ipswich Town last weekend.

Although the newly promoted Tractor Boys performed well during the first 45 minutes at Portman Road, Liverpool significantly improved in the second half, with goals from Diogo Jota and Mohamed Salah ensuring their win over Ipswich.

The transformation in Liverpool’s performance after the break was remarkable. Despite being vulnerable to counter-attacks from Ipswich winger Omari Hutchinson in the first half, Liverpool dominated the second half, frequently breaking through Kieran McKenna’s side after the interval.

The two halves of the football match highlighted the contrasting styles of Klopp and Slot. The first half was a chaotic, end-to-end battle typical of Klopp’s approach, with Liverpool only staying level thanks to Alisson’s efforts.

In contrast, the second half saw Liverpool take on a more controlled style, reminiscent of Slot’s tactics, which allowed them to tighten their defensive play.

As Ipswich retreated deeper into their own half, Liverpool effectively neutralized their counterattacking threat by winning key duels, a point the Dutchman emphasised after the game.

And Slot has now explained to Sky Sports he wants to see his Liverpool side adopted “a better judgement” when it comes to “risk and reward”, emphasising a difference between himself and Klopp.

“Liverpool used every moment they could to play the ball in behind [before]”, Slot told ex-Reds ace Jamie Carragher.

“That meant that the game was sometimes a bit open, especially in the last period of Jurgen. Sometimes I tell the players to get a better judgement in risk and reward.

“So if you can put some balls in front of the goalkeeper, please try and do so if not, it’s also a good idea to keep the ball but I’m sure if Jurgen was in the room now he’d say he’d want to keep the ball once in a while too.

“In general, I see that still some players are trying to play the difficult ball which doesn’t get the reward for the risk they take.

“I believe the one reasons why the players buy in [to my work] is that the differences are not that big. There are only small differences between Jurgen and me and the general idea of how we want to play football is quite similar.”

Thought

During the Jurgen Klopp era, particularly in the last two seasons, Liverpool often appeared too open at times.

While this approach was certainly entertaining, a bit more control in certain games would have been beneficial.

However, it’s important to note that embracing the chaos was a key element of what made Klopp’s tenure so thrilling.

This approach also led Liverpool to win every major club trophy. Slot still has a long way to go before he can match Klopp’s accomplishments at Anfield.
