Paul Merson Points Out Liverpool’s Flaw That Makes Them “a Bit Like Arsenal and Could Hinder Them in the Title Race

Liverpool and Arsenal are determined to finally end Manchester City’s reign as Premier League champions this season.

Liverpool are the only team that have prevented City from winning seven consecutive titles, while Arsenal have been Pep Guardiola’s closest rival for the past two seasons.

Last year, Liverpool, Arsenal, and Man City were locked in an intense title race. The Reds fell behind in mid-April, while the Gunners kept the competition alive until the final day.

This season, Liverpool aim to give Arne Slot a successful debut at Anfield, while Arsenal hopes that the third time will be the charm.

However, Paul Merson has pointed out a potential weakness that makes Liverpool “a bit like Arsenal” and could affect their chances in the title race.

Liverpool and Arsenal “Top Four at Best” with “Two or Three Injuries”

Merson, in an article on Sportskeeda, suggests that while Liverpool and Arsenal boast excellent starting lineups, their seasons could be significantly disrupted if key players were to suffer injuries.

“If Liverpool don’t win the Premier League this year, they’re not going to win with the same players next year, and they will need to make changes,” wrote the Highbury legend.

“Liverpool are a bit like Arsenal – if they keep their players fit, they are major challengers. If they have two or three injuries to deal with, they’ll compete for the top four at best.”

Strength in Depth Will Be Key in Title Race

Unfortunately for Liverpool and Arsenal supporters, Merson’s point is valid. Manchester City not only boasts an exceptional starting XI, but their squad depth is also extraordinary.

This depth makes them nearly unstoppable during the crucial stages of the season when injuries, suspensions, and fatigue often become significant factors.

Liverpool’s summer transfer dealings have not exactly inspired confidence among their fans, leaving their title race prospects uncertain.

This season could be one of transition for the new Anfield manager and his team.

On the other hand, Arsenal have been focused on strengthening their squad depth. Their defense is particularly noteworthy, with Riccardo Calafiori joining and Jurrien Timber back to full fitness.
