“I Hope I’m Wrong”: Gary Lineker Predicts Where Liverpool Will Finish in the Premier League Table This Season

Liverpool will kick off their 2024/25 Premier League season with an away match against Ipswich Town.

Facing a newly promoted team in the opening game, especially on the road, is always a challenge, but Liverpool will need to secure the win.

There is significant anticipation surrounding Arne Slot’s debut season at Anfield, and the initial indications have been very promising.

However, the main worry is that Liverpool have yet to make any signings in this summer’s transfer window, which could affect their performance in the coming season.

Gary Lineker Predicts Liverpool’s Final League Position in 2024/25

In the most recent episode of the “Rest is Football” podcast, Gary Lineker, Micah Richards, and Alan Shearer discussed their predictions for where Liverpool will finish in the Premier League this season.

Last season, Jurgen Klopp’s final one with the club, Liverpool were strongly in contention for the title, even appearing as though they might secure it at one stage.

Unfortunately, results didn’t favour them in the last two months, and they ultimately ended up in third place, behind Manchester City and Arsenal.

Although Liverpool still boast a strong squad, they have yet to make any significant improvements.

The team is still in need of a new number six to maximize their chances of success this season, but currently, it doesn’t seem like any new signings are on the horizon.

Nevertheless, Richards and Shearer are both confident that Liverpool will hold onto their third-place finish in the Premier League. Lineker, on the other hand, believes they might slip a spot.

He said: “I’m going to go one down, fourth! I think it would be impossible for them after Jurgen Klopp. I really do. I think they’ll probably just get the Champions League spot.

“I just don’t know how when someone (has been) so dominant at a club for so long that whoever comes in, it’s going to be impossible for.

“I hope I’m wrong, he seems like a great guy and as you said, they have gone well in pre-season. But, fourth for me.”

It’s crucial for any club to support their manager, particularly when they are new. For various reasons, Liverpool have not provided that backing this summer.

The Reds have yet to make any signings during this transfer window, and there is little indication that they are close to acquiring players who will aid them in the upcoming season.

This situation puts Slot in a challenging position. Replacing Klopp is a significant task, and asking him to do so without reinforcements from the market seems unfair.

Nevertheless, Liverpool have performed well under Slot in pre-season, and if they maintain this level of play, a top-four finish should be achievable.

In our view, that would mark a successful debut season for the new Liverpool manager.
