Jamie Carragher Drops Verdict on Liverpool’s 2024/25 Premier League Title Chances

Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has shared his thoughts on Liverpool’s chances for the 2024/25 Premier League title.

With the new Premier League season just days away, Liverpool will begin their campaign against newly-promoted Ipswich Town on Saturday lunchtime.

A successful pre-season, during which Liverpool defeated Real Betis, Arsenal, Manchester United, and Sevilla, has raised hopes for the new season.

Additionally, a favourable early fixture list could allow Liverpool to make a strong start under their new Dutch coach.

Nevertheless, considering Jurgen Klopp’s long tenure at Liverpool, there may still be some initial challenges for the former Feyenoord manager.

Consequently, Carragher does not have high expectations for Liverpool in the upcoming season. In a conversation with FourFourTwo, the former Liverpool defender expressed his belief that Manchester City and Arsenal remain the only teams likely to win the title.

“I can only see Arsenal or City really,” said Carragher. “I know people are talking about Arsenal because they’ve gone close twice and they’re really close to making that next step.

“But I still look at Kevin De Bruyne, Erling Haaland, Phil Foden and Bernardo Silva, and I think that is still better than what Arsenal have got.”

The former England international thinks it’s premature for Slot’s team to contend for the title, particularly since he believes Liverpool exceeded expectations last season.

“I was really surprised Liverpool came so close last season, if I’m being honest,” he added.

“With the new manager coming in, finding his feet in the Premier League, most Liverpool fans would expect top four this season. I don’t think anyone will be expecting a title.

“If you could have a title challenge like last season, and maybe a new manager comes in and adds something to what Jurgen Klopp had, but having a new manager in the Premier League is not easy and I think Liverpool slightly overperformed last season in terms of being in the title race for so long.

“Another season like Liverpool had last season would be a great start for Arne Slot.”
