“My Preferred Position”: Harvey Elliott Tells Arne Slot Where He’d Really Like to Play for Liverpool
Liverpool midfielder Harvey Elliott is currently thriving under the guidance of new manager Arne Slot.
Slot has placed significant trust in Elliott during Liverpool’s pre-season preparations, with the 21-year-old participating in matches against both Real Betis and Arsenal.
In the first game, Elliott started and played 64 minutes, followed by a 72-minute appearance against Arsenal.
He delivered an outstanding performance in the latter match, earning widespread praise from Liverpool supporters. Elliott contributed both assists in the 2-1 victory over Mikel Arteta’s side, earning a commendable rating of 8/10 for his efforts.
Elliott States the Preferred Position He’d Like to Play for Liverpool
The adaptable young player has taken on various roles during his time at Liverpool, playing both in midfield and in attack.
However, Elliott has now specified his preferred position for the upcoming season under Slot, expressing a desire to enhance his creativity in the number 10 role.
“I think so,” said Elliott, as quoted by BBC Sport. “It’s my preferred position but wherever the boss tells me to play, I am comfortable playing anywhere.
“I’ve said many times I just want to go out and play for the team and wear the shirt in any positions, do the job to the best of my ability.
“But if you’re talking about preferred positions, that’s probably my preferred position. I play there with England as well and I am used to it.
“It’s down to me to show them, keep working hard, put in performances in the games and training and see what happens.”
Thought
Elliott showcased his creativity against the Gunners by providing an exceptional through ball from his own half to assist Mohamed Salah’s opening goal.
He later contributed to Fabio Carvalho’s goal with a perfectly weighted chip pass, allowing Carvalho to score with a volley.
This inventive play was also evident under Jurgen Klopp last season, during which the 21-year-old recorded 11 assists across all competitions.
Elliott is now aiming to make an impression on the new manager, having also scored four goals in the prior season.
Discussing whether staying in one position will help his development, Elliott said: “Absolutely, that’s what I need to do. I need to cement my real position that I can keep working on, building and improving.
“As I said, I won’t turn down playing anywhere and I am happy to put on my shirt and play. But that’s the next step, to try and play in one position to physically and mentally work towards it and keep pushing.”
