Report: Liverpool Eyeing Move for Champions League Goalkeeper as Possible Replacement for Caoimhin Kelleher

Liverpool have been linked with another Real Madrid player in this summer’s transfer window.

Players like Arda Guler and Rodrygo have been mentioned as potential interests for the Reds recently, despite how unlikely those transfers may appear.

According to Graeme Bailey from HITC, the Merseyside club are contemplating a move for Andriy Lunin as a possible replacement for either Alisson Becker or Caoimhin Kelleher.

Alisson is reportedly being targeted by Saudi Pro League clubs (TEAMtalk), while Kelleher has expressed a desire to become a first-choice goalkeeper away from Liverpool.

Euro 2024 was a disappointing tournament for Lunin, who committed two significant mistakes in Ukraine’s 3-0 loss to Romania in their group opener, resulting in his replacement by Anatoliy Trubin.

In contrast, the Real Madrid goalkeeper played a crucial yet unheralded role in the club’s Champions League victory last season, appearing in eight matches as they advanced to the final due to Thibaut Courtois’s injury. Courtois returned for the final against Borussia Dortmund at Wembley.

The 25-year-old appeared in all of Real Madrid’s knockout stage games, including saving two penalties in the shootout win against Manchester City in the quarter-finals.

He conceded fewer than one goal per game in LaLiga, with 17 goals in 21 matches, and achieved a clean sheet rate of 47.6% with 10 clean sheets.

With the Belgian player who caused our 2022 defeat at the Stade de France now fully fit again, Lunin might face limited playing time at the Bernabeu. Additionally, he is in the final year of his contract in Madrid.

Although he may not be at the level of Alisson, whom we hope remains at Liverpool despite Saudi interest, the Ukrainian could be a solid backup if Kelleher leaves.

A potential transfer for the Real Madrid goalkeeper might depend on a chain reaction at Anfield, but if that happens, it’s likely Richard Hughes would be prompted to act.
