Journalist Now Claims Liverpool Really Like Brazilian Player But Midfield Not the Priority This Summer

Liverpool are among the clubs reportedly interested in Wolverhampton Wanderers midfielder Joao Gomes. However, according to journalist Ben Jacobs, the midfield is not a priority for the club’s recruitment team this summer.

With new head coach Arne Slot taking over from Jurgen Klopp, this transfer window is expected to be significant for Liverpool.

While the club’s strong recruitment history means major changes aren’t necessary, there are areas where additional depth is needed.

Just 12 months ago, Liverpool revamped their midfield, bringing in Dominik Szoboszlai, Alexis Mac Allister, Ryan Gravenberch, and Wataru Endo to replace Jordan Henderson, Fabinho, and James Milner.

Nonetheless, some fans feel that further improvements, especially in the number six position, are still required.

Ben Jacobs Claims Liverpool Really Like the Brazilian Star

Liverpool hold a strong interest in Wolves midfielder Gomes, as reported by journalist Ben Jacobs. On his Transfer Mailbag show, Jacobs mentioned that while midfield may not be a top priority for the Reds this summer, a potential move remains possible.

Jacobs identified Gomes, who impressed Sky Sports pundit Micah Richards during a live match, as a player Liverpool really like.

The 23-year-old is under contract with Wolves until 2028, with an option for an additional year. Gomes joined Wolves from Brazilian club Flamengo in January 2023 and has made nearly 50 appearances for the team since then. Jacobs said:

“Midfield is not as high on their list of priorities as a centre-back and wide player. But, I don’t think we can entirely rule it out and Liverpool really like Joao Gomes as well, so that could be one to watch in the coming months. But for now, midfield is not the priority.”

Liverpool aren’t the only club eyeing Gomes; if they decide to go after the midfielder, they’ll likely compete with Manchester United. It was reported that the Red Devils are among several clubs scouting the Brazil international.
