Liverpool Star Admits His Impressive End-of-season Form With the Club Gave Him the Perfect Boost Ahead of Euro 2024

Cody Gakpo attributes his impressive form at Euro 2024 with the Netherlands to his experience at Liverpool as he prepares for the quarter-final match against Turkey this Saturday.

The 25-year-old has been outstanding in Germany, scoring three goals and providing one assist for the Dutch, helping them reach the competition’s last eight.

Gakpo arguably delivered his finest performance of the tournament in the round of 16 against Romania earlier this week. He opened the scoring with a near-post strike and displayed remarkable determination to assist Donyell Malen in their 3-0 victory.

One notable difference for Gakpo has been that national team manager Ronald Koeman has utilized him as a left winger, the position he often played at PSV Eindhoven before his transfer to Anfield.

His impressive displays on the wing have given new Liverpool head coach Arne Slot a clear strategy for maximizing the forward’s potential.

“Those moments are normal for a player, it’s not always going very well and going the way you like,” said Gakpo.

“Sometimes you have a spell [where] things don’t go your way but, to be honest, I have a great team at Liverpool, great people that always are there for me and for everybody when you have those moments. They kept believing in me, kept helping me with everything.

“I think the last, I don’t know how many, games of the season at the club I played also good games. I just took that with me and kept working very hard. I’m very happy that I can be of value for the team.”

If the Netherlands defeat Turkey and England overcome Switzerland in the Euro 2024 quarter-finals, Gakpo will meet his Liverpool teammates Trent Alexander-Arnold and Joe Gomez in the semi-final.

Although the Netherlands haven’t won the Euros since 1988, Gakpo’s outstanding play is keeping hopes alive for an unlikely triumph.
