Fabrizio Romano Drops Liverpool “Possibility” Transfer Claim on 12-goal PL Star

Liverpool signing Anthony Gordon from Newcastle this summer, but they are not willing to overpay, according to journalist Fabrizio Romano.

Gordon had an impressive season with Newcastle, scoring 12 goals in all competitions and helping the team secure a top-seven finish. This performance has attracted Liverpool’s interest, though recent reports suggest a deal is unlikely this summer.

However, Romano has indicated that the transfer could happen if Newcastle agree to a lower offer. Currently in Germany for England’s Euros campaign, Gordon is reportedly very interested in a potential move to Anfield.

Rising through Everton’s academy, Gordon made his mark in the 2021/22 season and went on to appear 78 times for the first team.

His departure came in January 2023 when he secured a £40 million transfer to Newcastle, having refused to attend training with Everton, which expedited his move to the north-east.

Following a standout season with Newcastle, where he was ranked among the Top 10 fastest players in the Premier League, Gordon might once again be at the center of a transfer saga, with Liverpool showing interest.

Despite his history with Everton, Gordon grew up as a Liverpool fan and may now seek a move to the red side of the Mersey.

Romano has claimed that such transfer to Liverpool this summer, is a possibility. During a Transfer Live Show, he commented on the situation:

“[Is it a] possibility? Absolutely, I would say it’s always possible. Because if you make a big proposal, yes, but Liverpool, when they had direct contact with Newcastle about Anthony Gordon in the past week, in the moment it was really difficult for Newcastle on financial fair play. Newcastle asked for big money and for Liverpool, that was way too much.

“So, if there is a normal price, an acceptable price, Gordon remains a player really appreciated by Liverpool, and Gordon was keen on joining Liverpool.

“So there is a feeling between Anthony Gordon and Liverpool that’s very clear, a very positive feeling, but Liverpool will not pay completely crazy money. So if Newcastle dropped the price, that could be a possibility.”

Newcastle would likely aim to make a substantial profit on Gordon if they decide to approve a deal. It remains uncertain whether there will be a price reduction, but it is evident that Arne Slot admires the Englishman and considers him a potential alternative to Luis Diaz on the left side of his attack.

New manager Slot is keen to bolster the defensive lineup this summer in addition to enhancing attacking options.

With Joel Matip’s departure following the expiration of his contract, there is a need for a new central defender to support Virgil van Dijk, Jarrel Quansah, and Ibrahima Konate.

The League Cup winners are highly interested in acquiring Lille’s Leny Yoro, who is valued at £50 million and also targeted by Real Madrid.

At 18, Yoro is considered one of Europe’s most promising talents, and Liverpool has already begun discussions with Lille regarding a potential transfer.
