Adrien Rabiot and Four Other Free Agents Liverpool Could Sign This Summer

Liverpool have not entered the transfer market this summer yet, but they might consider signing a free agent to strengthen their squad.

Liverpool are expected to enter the transfer market this summer. There have been links to players like Joshua Kimmich and Riccardo Calafiori, and it was reported that Newcastle winger Anthony Gordon was part of transfer discussions over the weekend to help the Magpies address their PSR concerns.

However, nothing concrete has materialised yet. With two international tournaments underway and new Reds boss Arne Slot still getting acquainted with his squad, it may be a few weeks before firm transfer plans take shape.

Nevertheless, several free agents currently available could interest Liverpool as they aim to strengthen their squad for the upcoming Premier League season.

Having said goodbye to Thiago Alcantara and Joel Matip, who left at the end of their contracts, Liverpool might be tempted to explore the market. Newsnow Liverpool has reviewed potential targets that could appeal to Slot and his team.

Adrien Rabiot

Adrien Rabiot, currently playing for France in Euro 2024, is a free agent after his contract with Juventus expired. The 29-year-old midfielder has played in all of France’s group-stage matches and is expected to feature in their round-of-16 clash against Belgium.

Although Liverpool’s midfield is quite competitive, Rabiot could be a valuable addition due to his experience. However, Liverpool might prefer to recruit younger talent given Rabiot’s age. Additionally, he is likely to seek a high salary, and despite his expired contract, Juventus are reportedly keen on re-signing him this summer.

Memphis Depay

Memphis Depay, once considered a flop at Manchester United, has found reasonable success at the clubs he’s played for since then. Currently a free agent after being released by Atletico Madrid, the Dutch forward is seeking his next opportunity.

Depay, who can play across the front three, could be a versatile addition to Liverpool’s attacking options. However, his performance last season was modest, with the 30-year-old scoring only five goals in La Liga and nine in all competitions.

Mario Hermoso

With persistent links to Italy defender Riccardo Calafiori this summer, it appears the Reds are keen on adding a left-footed centre-back to their squad.

If they seek a more affordable alternative to Calafiori, who is expected to cost around $50m (£40m/€42m), left-footed Spaniard Mario Hermoso could be a viable option for Liverpool.

Like Depay, Hermoso was recently released by Atletico Madrid. During his five-year tenure with the La Liga side, he made over 170 appearances and is capable of playing both left-back and centre-back.

If deployed at left-back, Hermoso’s addition would allow Liverpool to adopt a 3-2 shape during build-up. This would enable Trent Alexander-Arnold to move into midfield, while Hermoso would join Virgil van Dijk and either Jarell Quansah or Ibrahima Konate in defense.

Raphael Varane

Not long ago, the idea of Raphael Varane being available as a free agent would have been inconceivable. However, after leaving Old Trafford following Manchester United’s FA Cup victory over Manchester City, Varane is now on the lookout for a new club.

Despite his status as an experienced and highly accomplished defender, a move for the Frenchman appears unlikely. Nevertheless, he is sure to catch the attention of Saudi Pro League clubs this summer.

Keylor Navas

Keylor Navas, a seasoned goalkeeper, is currently a free agent after departing Paris Saint-Germain this summer. He could provide valuable backup to Alisson at Liverpool.

As the Reds consider parting ways with Caoimhin Kelleher and Adrian, Navas’s experience could offer a prudent solution in the upcoming transfer window.
