Gordon Alternative: Liverpool Should Make a Move for 23-year-old Forward After Euro2024 Exit
Liverpool declined a swap deal involving Anthony Gordon and Jarell Quansah, preferring instead to pursue an ideal alternative in a Euro 2024 standout.
While Liverpool boast depth on the left flank of its attack, there’s a strong argument that pursuing Newcastle United and England forward Anthony Gordon would elevate their squad.
Having netted 11 goals and provided 10 assists in the previous Premier League campaign, the ex-Everton winger showcases immense talent, combining dynamism with consistent end product that would intrigue any global club.
However, despite Newcastle approaching Liverpool last week regarding a swap deal involving Jarell Quansah, negotiations fell through. The Reds admire Gordon’s abilities but were unwilling to part with their promising young center-back to secure his services.
Liverpool might reconsider their pursuit of Gordon and instead explore an alternative option. Napoli’s Khvicha Kvaratskhelia presents a compelling choice, boasting similar stylistic qualities and proven effectiveness in front of goal, which could bolster Arne Slot’s squad.
Kvaratskhelia recently showcased his prowess, notably impressing against Spain in Euro 2024 despite his team’s elimination. Since joining Napoli in 2022, he has scored 25 goals and provided 26 assists in 88 appearances, demonstrating his versatility and impact.
Similar to Gordon, the Georgia international excels in driving his team forward with his dribbling ability, displaying a direct and decisive approach toward goal.
His recent performances, including forcing an own goal and nearly scoring from midfield against Real Sociedad, underscore his potential.
Reportedly, two other Premier League clubs excluding Liverpool are keen on the 23-year-old Georgian forward.
He reportedly favours a move to the Premier League over interest from PSG. Given these factors, Liverpool should seriously consider pursuing Kvaratskhelia as a valuable addition to their squad.
“I respect [new Napoli boss Antonio] Conte, he’s one of the best managers,” Kvaratskhelia said while away with his country, Georgia, at the European Championship. “I respect also Napoli, I love Napoli. I will decide my future after the Euros. Now I’m focused on the game vs Spain.”
Now that Georgia have crashed out of Euro2024, things should become clear quickly. If there’s a possibility of acquiring Kvaratskhelia at a reasonable price, even if it necessitates him advocating for an exit, Liverpool should pursue it vigorously.
“There are no doubts,” new Napoli boss Conte said in a press conference last week. “Khvicha stays here and he will play for Napoli. It’s all clear. Kvara will stay here with us.”
Napoli issued a club statement, cautioning potential suitors of their star player this summer. “Regarding the statements from Kvaratskhelia’s agent, Mamuka Jugeli, and his father Badri, Calcio Napoli reaffirms the player’s existing contract for another three years,” the statement read.
However, Kvaratskhelia’s own stance appears less decisive. His representatives have emphasized his desire not to miss a season of Champions League football, suggesting Liverpool could provide the ideal opportunity for him to achieve this goal.
