Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez has faced a challenging few months.
Despite performing well for most of the season, Nunez’s form significantly declined towards the end.
He managed to score only one goal in his last 13 matches for Liverpool and none in his final 10, raising questions about whether the club might consider selling him.
However, such a move seems unlikely at the moment. Nunez appears poised to remain at Anfield, with Arne Slot willing to give him another opportunity.
On Wednesday night, the 24-year-old demonstrated why Liverpool’s decision to stick with him is justified. Back home with Uruguay, Nunez scored a hat-trick against Mexico.
Darwin Nunez Hits Hat-trick for Uruguay
Although Darwin Nunez’s form for Liverpool has been inconsistent, his recent performances for his national team have been outstanding.
Following his hat-trick last night, the former Benfica player now boasts eight goals in his last five games for Uruguay. With the Copa America approaching this summer, Liverpool’s number nine is in top form.
Nunez opened the scoring against Mexico just seven minutes into the match, capitalizing on a loose ball in the six-yard box.
He struck again just before half-time, slotting home a squared ball. The hat-trick was completed just minutes into the second half.
Once again, Nunez found the net from within the six-yard box. After a smooth play from Uruguay, he couldn’t miss as Facundo Pellistri provided a perfectly placed pass across the goal.
It was an exceptional display of poaching from the Liverpool striker, with all three goals coming from close range. The Uruguayan media took notice, with El Observador rating Nunez nine out of ten.
Surprisingly, their praise remained measured. They noted that the hat-trick ‘suits Nunez very well’ and commended his ‘mobility.’
Besides his goals, El Observador also praised Nunez for initiating an attack from the left wing and for a ‘good run’ that was thwarted by the Mexican goalkeeper. It was indeed a stellar performance from Darwin Nunez.
Darwin Nunez Shows Why He’s Not Done at Liverpool
We have not yet witnessed this version of Nunez at Liverpool. Although he has had moments of brilliance, his performance for Uruguay displayed pure striker’s instinct.
It might seem harsh to say, but if Nunez had been given these chances at Liverpool, he might have missed at least one.
Nevertheless, his performance on Wednesday clearly indicates that the Reds must continue to support Darwin.
If he can feel happier and more settled under Slot, he could become a significant asset for Liverpool. There is no one else in the squad – possibly even in all of European football – quite like him.
Hopefully, this can now propel Darwin to have a strong Copa America before returning to the AXA Training Centre, happy and refreshed. He’s not finished yet.
